On November 13, 2022 there was a massive school shooting that injured two and killed three. The three victims identified as deceased was Devin Chandler, D’Sean Perry, and Lavel Tyler. The students had just arrived back from a class trip to see a play and were attacked as the bus pulled into their campus parking garage.

The University was on locked down for approximately 12 hours while they searched for the suspect. The University also canceled class Monday and other public schools in the surrounding county were closed. The suspect was identified to be Christopher Darnell Jones Jr.

The University’s president, Jim Ryan was the person who identified the victims and the suspect to the police. The students were confused and anxious about the whole incident. Students would come to events that were only for the faculty and staff because they did not know what else to do.

After the university went through this traumatic event, about a hundred students and community members gathered shortly after sunset at the St. Paul’s Memorial Church. It was facing the university’s rotunda. Surrounding by lit candles, those gathered around stood and sang “Amazing Grace.”

In respect of the deceased football players, during the 2023 NFL Draft, the three victims were named the honorary first draft picks for their favorite teams. Their families were presented with their favorite team jerseys with their names on them.
